Gusul

How to perform GUSUL?

Answer

Gusul is meant to purify ones body from sexual impurity & is obligatory on the believing men and women for offering the prayers. A believer who is in the sexual impurity can not pray or touch the Quran. As Allah says in the Quran:

O ye who believe! When ye prepare for prayer wash your faces and your hands (and arms) to the elbows; rub your heads (with water); and (wash) your feet to the ankles. If ye are in a state of ‘janaba’ (sexual impurity) bathe your whole body. But if ye are ill or on a journey, or one of you cometh from offices of nature, or ye have been in (sexual) contact with women, and ye find no water then take for yourselves clean sand or earth and rub therewith your faces and hands. Allah doth not wish to place you in a difficulty but to make you clean and to complete His favor to you that ye may be grateful QURAN[5:6]

Thus it is obligatory for a believer to perform ‘Gusul’ or full bath. How ever if one finds no water to clean himself, Allah has permitted him to perform ‘tayamum’ to clean himself and become available for the prayers.

Steps for Performing Gusul:

1. Wash both hands three times.

2. Wash the private parts.

3. make a complete ablution(like the one for prayers I.e rinsed his mouth, washed his nose by putting water in it and blowing it out, washed his face and both forearms ) but delaying the washing of feet till the end of the Gusul.

4. Washing the head three times and letting the water to reach the roots of hairs.

5. Pouring water over the whole body beginning from the right side & then left side. It should be remembered that the whole body parts should become wet, including inside of ears, inside the navel, arm pits, inside the toes(with short nails).

6. Then withdraw your feet from that place (place where you take the bath) and then wash them.

The prophet Mohammad (pbuh) said:

Narrated 'Aisha: Whenever the Prophet took a bath after Janaba he started by washing his hands and then performed ablution like that for the prayer. After that he would put his fingers in water and move the roots of his hair with them, and then pour three handfuls of water over his head and then pour water all over his body. SAHIH AL-BUKHARI [Volume 1, Book 5, Number 248]

Narrated Maimuna: (the wife of the Prophet) Allah's Apostle performed ablution like that for the prayer but did not wash his feet. He washed off the discharge from his private parts and then poured water over his body. He withdrew his feet from that place (the place where he took the bath) and then washed them. And that was his way of taking the bath of Janaba. SAHIH AL-BUKHARI [Volume 1, Book 5, Number 249]

Narrated Jubair bin Mutim: Allah's Apostle said, "As for me, I pour water three times on my head." And he pointed with both his hands. SAHIH AL-BUKHARI [Volume 1, Book 5, Number 254]

Narrated Maimuna: I placed water for the bath of the Prophet. He washed his hands twice or thrice and then poured water on his left hand and washed his private parts. He rubbed his hands over the earth (and cleaned them), rinsed his mouth, washed his nose by putting water in it and blowing it out, washed his face and both forearms and then poured water over his body. Then he withdrew from that place and washed his feet. Sahih al-bukhari [Volume 1, Book 5, Number 257]

After completing the Gusul you become clean, and the prophet Mohammad (pbuh) did not use any cloth (towel) to dry his body, but he shook it off (i. e. he shake his body ) as mentioned in the narrations below:

Ibn Abbas narrated It on the authority of Maimuna that the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) was given a towel, but he did not rub (his body) with it, but he did like this with water, i. e. he shook it off. SAHIH MUSLIM[Book 3 : Hadith 622]

Narrated Maimuna: I placed water for the bath of the Prophet and he poured water with his right hand on his left and washed them. Then he washed his private parts and rubbed his hands on the ground, washed them with water, rinsed his mouth and washed his nose by putting water in it and blowing it out, washed his face and poured water on his head. He withdrew from that place and washed his feet. A piece of cloth (towel) was given to him but he did not use it. SAHIH AL-BUKHARI[Book 1 : Volume 5 : Hadith 259]

Significance of cap in islam?

Answer:

Wearing a cap is not obligatory for a Muslim man, but it is the Sunnah. During the time of the prophet Mohammad (pbuh) it was common to cover the head with turban and our beloved prophet (pbuh) used to cover his head most of the time. As it is clear in the narrations below:

Narrated Ja'far bin 'Amr: My father said, "I saw the Prophet passing wet hands over his turban and Khuffs (leather socks)." SAHIH AL-BUKHARI[Book 1 ,Vol. 4 , Hadith 204]

Narrated Anas ibn Malik: I saw the Messenger (peace_be_upon_him) perform ablution. He had a Qutri turban. He inserted his hand beneath the turban and wiped over the forelock, and did not untie the turban. ABU DAWUD [Book 1 , Hadith 147]

Ibn Mughira narrated it from his father: The Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) wiped over his socks and over his forehead and over his turban. SAHIH MUSLIM[Book 2 , Hadith 532]

Narrated byAbdullah ibn Umar When Allah's Messenger put on a turban he let the end hang between his shoulders. Al- Tirmidhi[Hadith: 4338]

From the above narrations it is clear that our beloved prophet Mohammad (pbuh) used to cover his head, thus it becomes Sunnah for the Muslims and we have to strive to follow our beloved prophet (pbuh) in every respect, as Allah says in the quran:

“There is indeed the best model for you in the Messenger of Allah, for every such person looks forward to Allah and the Last Day, and remember Allah much”. Quran[33:21]

Say (O Mohammad SAW to mankind): "If ye do love Allah, Follow me: Allah will love you and forgive you your sins: For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."[Quran 3:31]

Say (O Mohammad SAW to mankind): "Obey Allah and His Messenger.: But if they turn back, Allah loves not those who reject Faith.[Quran 3:32]

He who obeys the Messenger, obeys Allah. But if any turn away, We have not sent thee(Mohammad SAW) to watch over their (evil deeds). [Quran 4:80]

The prophet Mohammad (pbuh) said that he who loves my Sunnah, and then no doubt he loves me, as in the narration below:

Narrated byAnas ibn Malik Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said to me: My son, if you are in a position to pass your morning and evening keeping your heart free from malice against anyone, then act according to it (this high ideal). He then said: My son, and that is my Sunnah and he who loves my Sunnah, in fact loves me and he who loves me, will be with me in Paradise. AL- TIRMIDHI[Hadith:175]

so we Muslims should strive to love & implement the sunnah of our beloved prophet Mohammad (pbuh) and covering head is a sunnah of prophet Mohammad (pbuh) which distinguish us from the unbelievers, and Allah wanted us to fallow in every respect the prophet Mohammad (pbuh), as Allah calls prophet Mohammad (pbuh) a perfect role model for the believers and also Allah likes the mark of his favour on his servants as reported in this narration:

Narrated byAbdullah ibn Amr ibn al -'As Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Allah likes the mark of His favour to be seen on His servant. "AL-TIRMIDHI[Hadith: 4350]

Regarding that, is prayer valid if one prays with out covering his head? The answer is yes Wearing a covering on the head while offering his prayers or while reciting the Quran is not amongst the obligatory acts for a believing male in Shariah. If one covers his head, or leaves it uncovered; both ways his prayers and his worship will be considered valid. But if one fallows the sunnah of covering the head then it will be more better and closer to the prayers of prophet(pbuh). May Allah guide us to the right path

Significance of growing beard in Islam?

Answer:

It is not obligatory for a Muslim to keep a beard, but it is a sunnah, as prophet Mohammad (pbuh) was having beard.

Narrated Abu Ma'mar: I asked Khabbab bin Al-Art whether the Prophet used to recite the Qur'an in the Zuhr and the 'Asr prayers. He replied in the affirmative. I said, "How did you come to know that?" He replied, "From the movement of his beard." SAHIH AL-BUKHARI [Volume 1, Book 12, Number 728].

As Muslims, we follow everything the Prophet Mohamed (saws) said or did. He had a beard. All his companions had a beard. And in the below narrations, prophet Mohammad (pbuh) recommended Muslims to keep a beard. .

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: Allah's Apostle said, "Cut the moustaches short and leave the beard (as it is)." SAHIH AL-BUKHARI[Volume 7, Book 72, Number 781] .

Narrated Nafi': Ibn Umar said, The Prophet said, 'Do the opposite of what the pagans do. Keep the beards and cut the moustaches short.' Whenever Ibn 'Umar performed the Hajj or 'Umra, he used to hold his beard with his hand and cut whatever moustaches. Ibn Umar used to cut his moustache so short that the whiteness of his skin (above the upper lip) was visible, and he used to cut (the hair) between his moustaches and his beard. SAHIH AL-BUKHARI[Volume 7, Book 72, Number 780].

As Muslim, The Prophet (saws) should be our role model in every respect & through all walks of life as Allah says in the Holy Quran : .

“There is indeed the best model for you in the Messenger of Allah, for every such person looks forward to Allah and the Last Day, and remember Allah much”. Quran[33:21].

We should love to copy everything prophet Mohammad (pbuh) did, he had a beard and thus we should keep the beard. As those who keep the beard with the intention to fallow/obey/respect/love prophet Mohammad(pbuh) & for the pleasure of Allah, will get a great reward from Allah. As Allah says in the quran: .

Say (O Mohammad SAW to mankind): "If ye do love Allah, Follow me: Allah will love you and forgive you your sins: For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."[Quran 3:31] .

Say (O Mohammad SAW to mankind): "Obey Allah and His Messenger.: But if they turn back, Allah loves not those who reject Faith.[Quran 3:32] .

He who obeys the Messenger, obeys Allah. But if any turn away, We have not sent thee(Mohammad SAW) to watch over their (evil deeds). [Quran 4:80] .

Thus we should strive to follow & obey what prophet Mohammad SAW said or did, so that we may prosper in this world & hereafter. How ever if any Muslim brother does love Allah & his prophet (pbuh), but is unable to keep the beard (what ever reasons), then no doubt he has some weakness in the faith & lack of courage to show Islam on his face. .

The prophet mohammad(pbuh) said: .

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: The Prophet said, "There will emerge from the East some people who will recite the Qur'an but it will not exceed their throats and who will go out of (renounce) the religion (Islam) as an arrow passes through the game, and they will never come back to it unless the arrow, comes back to the middle of the bow (by itself) (i.e., impossible). The people asked, "What will their signs be?" He said, "Their sign will be the habit of shaving (of their beards).
